The Edo State Football Association (Edo FA) is thrilled to announce the commencement of the 2nd edition of the Under-18 Oba of Benin Football Tournament, set to kick off on Tuesday, December 10, in Edo State. This annual event, sponsored by Michael Ogbebor, a former footballer based in the United States, pays tribute to His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, as part of the traditional Igue Festival celebrations.
The tournament draw took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Media Centre in Benin City, where 19 teams were matched against each other for an exciting competitive season ahead. Ogbebor, who expressed his gratitude to the media, coaches, and stakeholders for their ongoing support in a phone call from New York, urged players to exhibit composure and fairness during the tournament.
One of the highlights unveiled by Ogbebor is the opportunity for the winners and runners-up of this year’s tournament to embark on tours to Denmark and Sweden in 2025. This initiative aims to provide young athletes with vital international exposure and motivate them to excel on the field. Mrs. Vera Ogbebor, representing her husband at the draw, encouraged teams to invest themselves fully in the competition, emphasizing that dedication and effort could attract further sponsorship opportunities.
The tournament structure includes 13 teams receiving a bye, while six teams will compete in the initial round to complete the Round of 16 lineup. Matches are scheduled to take place at Crescent Sports Club Irhiri, culminating in a grand finale on December 26, known as Boxing Day, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. The final match is anticipated to attract prominent chiefs, dignitaries, and stakeholders from Benin, enriching the event’s prestige.
A generous prize pool awaits the champions, featuring ₦1.5 million for the first-place team, ₦750,000 for the second-place team, and ₦500,000 for the third-place finishers, along with additional awards to recognize individual excellence on the pitch.
Ogbebor, who began his football journey with Best Stars FC under the guidance of coach Joseph Isokpehi, highlighted the tournament as his way of giving back to the community and the sport that significantly impacted his life. He fondly recalled his quest for greatness and enduring legacy in football.
The tournament not only celebrates the cultural heritage of the Oba of Benin but also serves as an inspiring platform for nurturing the next generation of football stars in Edo State.
