Edo Trains Operators of Herbal Homes
Operators of Herbal Homes in Edo State have received training from the Ministry of Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs to improve their services to patients. The training, which was held in the ministry’s conference room, had over 12 herbal homeowners in attendance.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Ifueko Alufokhai, who was represented by the Director of Rehabilitation Services, Mr Sylvester Okeguale, praised the herbal home directors for their dedication and integrity. He wished them more success and growth in their businesses and assured them of better incentives from the government. He also urged them to mentor and train successors who would carry on their legacy.
Mr Sylvester gave a lecture on ‘Depression’, a common health problem that affects one’s mood and interest in daily activities. He said that research has shown that women are more likely to suffer from depression than men.
He mentioned the different kinds of depression, such as bipolar, major depression and persistent depression. He highlighted some of the factors that can trigger depression, such as adverse events, life stressors and negative thinking.
He also suggested some ways to cope with depression, such as relaxation, medication and physical exercise. He advised the herbal home operators to be vigilant for signs of depression in themselves, their families and their patients.
Another speaker at the event was Dr Nosakhare Idemudia, from the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). He commended the state government for providing the opportunity for people to learn and upgrade themselves. He also encouraged the participants to be open-minded and eager to learn.
Dr Nosakhare stressed that technology has enhanced the health sector greatly by offering accurate diagnosis and treatment. He mentioned the collaboration between the state government and ANPA (Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas) to boost the services of PHCs (Primary Health Care) through telemedicine.
He also advised the herbal home operators to adopt measurement and evaluation methods in giving herbs to their patients. He also recommended that they refer complex cases to either orthodox clinics or other traditional homes.
The event ended with a remark from Dr Jude Omon Oleabhiele, who is also the Vice President of the Association of Lunatic Healers, Edo State. He applauded the ministry for organizing the lecture series.
