Public health experts are urging Nigerians to make regular exposure to sunshine, particularly early morning sun, a part of their routine.
According to these experts, soaking up the sun can help lower blood pressure levels and even reduce mortality from cardiovascular issues.

It is believed that sunlight triggers the release of nitrogen oxides from the skin, which subsequently expands blood vessels, thus lowering blood pressure. The experts, including Professor Tanimola Akande from the University of Ilorin and public health physician Dr. David Adetola, highlighted the benefits of sunlight in boosting the body’s vitamin D supply. However, the experts cautioned against excessive exposure to sunlight, particularly after 10 am, as it can be harmful. The recommended duration of sunlight exposure is typically 5 to 15 minutes, depending on an individual’s skin type. Dark-skinned individuals may require up to 30 minutes. The use of sunscreen is also advised for prolonged exposure.
Lack of sunlight can lead to vitamin D deficiency, which is crucial for bone health. Exposure to sunlight improves bone health and decreases the risk of diseases in both children and adults.
Additionally, studies have shown that sunlight exposure can reduce blood pressure, increase blood flow, and even alleviate certain autoimmune diseases.
