Flood Victims In Akoko Edo Local Government Council Headquarters Cry Out For Urgent Government Assistance

Victims of the massive flood that swept through Igarra town, headquarters of Akoko Edo local Government area, are appealing for aid to mitigate their misery over the loss of their homes and businesses.
The appeal of the victims whose case is being championed by The BraveHeart Initiative, a women led nonprofit organization headquartered in the community, is for urgent assistance from the Federal Government, Edo State Government, Akoko-Edo Local Government Council, international organizations, and all well-meaning stakeholders and public spirited individuals,
The requested support includes the supply of relief materials, financial assistance for rehabilitation and reconstruction, expertise for damage assessment and infrastructure repair, medical assistance, and psychological support for the displaced.
About two weeks ago, specifically on July 8, 2024, a sudden and unprecedented heavy downpour wreaked havoc, causing severe flooding that displaced numerous residents and destroyed properties across the community.
The flood, which primarily affected areas such as Lawani Street, Old Sege Road, Market Road, Technical Road, Domingo Street, Orere, and Alafia Street, resulted from a combination of poor road networks, dilapidated bridges, inadequate drainage systems, and the exacerbating effects of climate change. The catastrophic event mirrored a similar incident that occurred a decade ago, with a far more devastating impact this time.
The BraveHeart Initiative’s rapid assessment revealed that over 200 homes have been affected, with the flood causing an estimated loss of N56,650,900. Many survivors are struggling to access basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter.
The flood has also led to significant economic hardships, with destroyed crops, livestock, and properties further compounding the plight of the residents. Women and children, in particular, have borne the brunt of this disaster, exacerbating existing gender inequalities and vulnerabilities.
Eyewitnesses and victims recounted harrowing experiences. Ms. Priscilla Usiobaifo, Executive Director of the Initiative, noted that about 85 houses were submerged, while Mrs. Theresa Moses lost 450 birds and significant household items.
According to reports, despite visits from the Local Government Area Chairman, politicians, and media personnel, the affected areas remain in desperate need of tangible assistance. The initial hope brought by the visits has dwindled as no significant aid has been provided.
The BraveHeart Initiative urges the government to implement proactive measures to prevent future floods. These include stopping land allocation in flood-prone areas, improving waste management efforts, and investing more in flood mitigation infrastructure. The BraveHeart Initiative emphasizes that the safety of citizens should take precedence over revenue generation from land allocations.
