The Gbolomotin community in Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State is appealing to the state government for protection amidst unfounded allegations linking them to recent violent incidents. This statement was made by Mr. Karaem Ebimobobowei, the community’s spokesperson, on Sunday in Benin.
Ebimobobowei emphasized that the community neither instigated nor participated in the tragic killings of cocoa farmers that have dominated discussions in certain circles. Speculation arises following violent clashes on February 21, which resulted in the deaths of at least 23 individuals and the destruction of numerous homes across seven communities, including Gbolomotin, Marindoti, Kola village, Taiye Camp, Eto Camp, Dipe, Bala Dele, and Thousand Village.
These affected areas comprise a diverse population, including members from the Ijaw, Yoruba, Bini ethnic groups, and others. According to Ebimobobowei, the conflict was ignited by allegations from cocoa farmers accusing some community members of stealing their crop. This prompted the farmers to establish a vigilance group to guard their produce.
While acknowledging the farmers’ concerns, Ebimobobowei stated that Gbolomotin’s community contended that it was the farmers’ vigilance group that targeted their youth, asserting, “We never attacked the cocoa farmers.”
He called for a comprehensive investigation by the state government and security agencies to uncover the truth and ensure justice.
The Gbolomotin community is hopeful that the government intervention will help clear their name and provide the necessary security to prevent future incidents.
