INEC Opens Online Portal for Edo Governorship Election Nominees

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is gearing up for the Edo governorship election by opening an online portal for political parties to submit details of their nominated candidates.

This initiative, as announced by Mr. Sam Olumekun, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee at INEC, sets a rapid timeline.

In his words, “The Commission would like political parties to be aware that only two nomination forms per party may be uploaded in a period of 20 days.

Consequently, there is no justification for requesting a time extension, and none will be granted past Sunday, March 24.

“Political parties ought to make sure that the deadlines are strictly followed.”

After the February 24 deadline for primaries, political parties have 20 days starting from March 4 to upload candidate information on the portal. This process ensures parties provide the Personal Particulars and Names of Nominated Candidates within the stipulated period.

Access to the portal began on March 1, with a set closure on March 24 at 6 p.m., underlining the importance of adhering strictly to the timeline. INEC emphasizes that each party can upload details for only two candidates – the party’s candidate and running mate.

To support a smooth nomination process, INEC plans to conduct refresher training for two party liaison officers from each political party between March 1 and 4 at the INEC Media Centre in Abuja. The centre will also function as a help desk for parties seeking assistance during the candidate nomination phase.
