The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has commenced a two-day capacity-building workshop for principals and coordinators of students’ anti-human trafficking vanguard in Edo.
The training, part of the School Anti-Trafficking Education and Advocacy Project (STEAP), aims to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent human trafficking among students.
Hajia Binta Adamu-Bello, Director-General of NAPTIP, emphasized the importance of educating students about human trafficking, describing it as a “clandestine crime” endemic in all states.
“Knowing that the youths are the main target of traffickers, we want to catch them young,” Adamu-Bello said. “We have infused the issue of trafficking into the school curriculum, but we also need to get the teachers to understand what the issues are.”
Ms. Monica Zanette, Head of PAN Africa Region of International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), noted that trafficking exists in local communities and requires a collective effort to combat.
“Our schools must be informed, safe, and resilient spaces where no child is left vulnerable to exploitation,” Zanette said. “As principals and vanguard coordinators, you are not just educators, you are frontline defenders of children’s rights.”
The training is designed to educate participants on recognizing warning signs of trafficking, exploring key resources, and fostering partnerships to prevent trafficking.
Edo State Commissioner of Education, Paddy Iyamu, commended the initiative, describing the anti-trafficking clubs as a “welcome development” in the state.
The workshop is part of a collaborative effort between NAPTIP, ICMPD, and the Kingdom of Netherlands to combat human trafficking in Nigeria.
