Obaseki Enforces Road Safety Measures, Suspends Local Government Heads

In a decisive move to safeguard state infrastructure, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has announced the suspension of three Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGA) for negligence.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, following an Executive Council meeting at the Government House.

The suspension comes in the wake of continued violations of the state’s ban on heavy-duty vehicles over 30 tonnes on state roads. The affected local government heads, from Owan West, Owan East, and Igueben councils, failed to enforce the ban, leading to significant damage to the roads.

Nehikhare reiterated the state’s policy, stating, “Our roads are not built to withstand the weight of heavy-duty vehicles carrying cement, petrol, and diesel. To prevent further damage, these vehicles must utilize Federal Government roads, which are designed for such loads.”

The government’s action reflects its commitment to protecting its infrastructural assets and ensuring that the roads are preserved for vehicles within their designed capacity. The commissioner called upon all local appointees to adhere strictly to the directives and prevent heavy-duty vehicles from causing further harm to the state’s roads.
