The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, inaugurated the Edo State Private Property Protection Law Implementation Committee with the mandate of strengthening land management and curbing activities of land grabbers and property speculators in various communities across the state.

Obaseki, during the committee’s inauguration at the Government House in Benin City, emphasized that amendments to the Edo State Private Property Protection Law were made to empower the committee to effectively enforce its responsibilities.

“This committee has been established to apprehend and restrain individuals who violate the provisions of the Edo State Private Property Protection Law 2021. They are tasked with receiving, monitoring, and conducting preliminary assessments of public and private complaints related to this law,” stated Obaseki. He added, “The committee is authorized to investigate offenses against the law, prosecute violators, and establish procedures necessary for their operations.”

Obaseki highlighted the challenges posed by rapid urbanization and land pressure, emphasizing the crucial role of law and order in fostering economic growth. He stressed the importance of upholding property rights and deterring unlawful trespassing on people’s land to protect the state’s economic foundation.

Addressing the committee on the need for effective land management, Obaseki urged them to collaborate with security agencies and the State Judiciary to ensure proper execution of their duties. Emphasizing the committee’s accountability, Obaseki warned against non-compliance with the law, emphasizing that violators would face consequences regardless of their status.

The committee’s Chairperson, Hon. Justice Alero Edodo-Eruaga (rtd), affirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, promoting development, industrialization, and creating employment opportunities. She vowed to eradicate illegal land transactions and ensure security across communities in Edo State to attract investments and foster economic prosperity.
