Obaseki Receives Award on Environmental Sustainability
The Nigeria Institute of Landscape Horticulturists has awarded Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, an award in recognition of his administration’s efforts to make Edo State greener, healthier, and cleaner.
At the Institute’s National Conference, which had as its theme “Greener Edo and Global Warming,” in Benin City, the governor was given special recognition.
The award, according to Pastor Folorunsho Omoruyi, on behalf of Alh. Kola Quadri, National President of the Institute, was given in honor of the governor’s commitment to environmental beautification and social development.
Chris Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, accepted the award on behalf of the governor and urged all parties involved to work together to realize the government’s goal of a green Edo by 2023.
He said, “The state is located in the tropical rainforest and has an abundance of natural resource.s I made a commitment to support and involve the state’s indigenous horticulturists during earlier courtesy calls to Government House and stakeholder meetings.
“I had previously requested a meeting with the commissioners for food and security, culture and tourism, environment and physical planning, and urban development at the Edo State Institute of Landscape Horticulturists. In order to raise awareness among our people about the value and aesthetic appeal of a green environment, I requested that the institute collaborate with these ministries to host workshops and seminars.
“In 2023, Edo State is going green. We are creating a new city that encourages compliance. In Benin City, we are revitalizing the areas along Ihama, Boundary Road, and Country Home Road.
In a keynote speech titled “Greener Edo and Global Warming,” Engineer Jonathan Lawani, Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, stated that “the effects of global warming and climate change is a result of the earth reacting and responding to the activities of humans.”
Lawani went on, “Trees and other vegetation are now required to absorb the majority of toxins and gases that affect humans and the environment, but humans have removed these natural absorbents. The more natural the earth is, the lesser the effects of climate change and global warming.
“Leading by example, we need to practice more environmentally friendly activities; create areas in our compounds for trees, grass, and flowers; encourage the use of renewable energy sources; and recycle, reuse, and reduce plastics and other recyclable wastes.”
He added, “The Edo State government has created a law that provides for a park and gardens agency to be established and also provides for the building of parks and gardens starting from next year. Aside from the requirement that landowners green their surroundings, the law also mandates that every child plant a tree on their birthday. If landowners fail to comply, the responsible agency will green the area and send them a bill for payment.”
