Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has forwarded five bills to the Edo State House of Assembly, including the groundbreaking Disability Rights Bill aimed at eliminating discrimination against individuals with disabilities.
The Electricity Commission and Agency Bill seeks to enhance power supply to all Edo residents, while other bills include the Edo Property Development Agency (EDPA) Bill, the Criminal Law Bill of Edo State, and the Justice Reform Bill.
Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Andrew Emwanta, disclosed this after the weekly Edo State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting, stating that the bills underwent thorough discussions and revisions before being sent to the State Assembly for legislative action.
In a related development, Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe, announced that external candidates will no longer be allowed to write exams in government-owned and private schools across the state.
Osa-Oviawe emphasized, “The EXCO has directed the Ministry of Education to issue a public statement informing parents, private school owners, and public school principals that, effective immediately, no external candidates will be permitted to write any exams in Edo.”
She added, “This policy aims to eradicate examination malpractice in our schools. The public is advised to take note, especially with the WAEC registration deadline approaching on February 25.”
The Council also mandated that starting from the 2022/2023 academic year, grade skipping will no longer be allowed, ensuring that students complete primary six before progressing to JSS one or writing WAEC exams in public schools.
