Obaseki Swears in Five New Judges, Highlights Judicial Achievements

In a recent event, the Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, administered the oath of office to five new judges for the Edo State High Court. He emphasized the importance of impartiality in their judicial duties.
He highlighted the recent reforms, particularly the law granting judiciary autonomy. He proudly stated that Edo State is among the few in Nigeria that have enacted this law.
He acknowledged the learning curve associated with the new law but reiterated his belief in the judiciary’s independence. He pledged to collaborate with the Chief Judge and judiciary members to refine the law’s application.
He drew attention to the ongoing infrastructural improvements in the judiciary, from courtrooms to accommodations for Judges, especially in Benin City. He mentioned the development plan currently being designed, ensuring that the judiciary’s infrastructural development would be completed within five years of implementing the new Edo State Master Plan.
In sync with the state’s other reforms, he encouraged the judiciary to leverage the state’s digital infrastructure. He mentioned the 2,000 km fiber optic connection built across the state, which is now available in every area with a High Court.
He expressed his gratitude to the Chief Judge for his continued support of the executive. He acknowledged the issues raised by the judges’ swearing-in and emphasized the importance of re-evaluating petitions critically as part of the government’s reform intentions for Edo State.
He mentioned that they are awaiting the National Judicial Commission (NJC) decision on other judges who have received petitions and assured compliance with the NJC’s decision.
He congratulated the newly sworn-in judges, noting their extended service time due to the retirement age extension. He wished them well and hoped they would always uphold justice in all cases brought before them.
Speaking on behalf of the new Judges, Osayende Ikwuemosi Awawu, assured, “We are going to do our jobs and perform our duties to the best of our ability.”
