Obaseki Urges Stakeholders to Support Forest Regeneration Efforts

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has called on stakeholders to collaborate with the government in implementing policies aimed at regenerating the state’s forests.
Addressing stakeholders at a workshop in Benin City, Obaseki emphasized the need to tackle illegality in the forestry sector, citing the devastating impact of unregulated logging and cannabis cultivation.
The governor noted, “Our forests have been ravaged by lawlessness, with widespread tree felling and drug cultivation. We must revive the forest guard system to protect our natural resources.” He highlighted the importance of responsible forest management, stating, “We have neglected our forests, and it’s time to take action to ensure their sustainability.”
Obaseki clarified that the recent closure of the forest was a necessary measure to reform the sector and ensure its contribution to the state’s development. He announced plans to establish an independent forestry commission, update outdated laws, and engage experts to secure the forest.
The governor emphasized the need for collective action, saying, “We must work together to fund the forestry commission and reopen the forest for business. Our goal is to plant at least one million trees annually to preserve the forest for future generations.”
Edo State Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Jonathan Lawani, emphasized the potential of the forest to generate revenue, create employment opportunities, and provide social and financial benefits if properly managed.
