Benin City, Edo State – On Friday, December 13, 2024, the Edo State government officially launched the emblem appeal fund in preparation for the upcoming 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration. The event took place at the Government House in Benin City, with the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Umar Musa Ikhilor, representing Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo.
During the launch, Barr. Ikhilor commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their unwavering dedication and significant sacrifices in the service of the nation. He emphasized the importance of Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a time to honor the bravery and commitment of military personnel who have served to protect Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty.
“Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our valiant servicemen and women, who have stood as a bulwark for our national integrity,” Ikhilor stated. “It is also a moment to pay tribute to our veterans, whose enduring spirit continues to inspire us all.”
The Secretary to the State Government highlighted the collective responsibility of citizens in nation-building, recognizing the exceptional contributions of the armed forces. “While everyone plays a role in our country’s development, there are those who give everything. These heroes are part of our Armed Forces, and it is essential that we honor their sacrifices,” he noted.
Ikhilor reiterated the state’s commitment to fostering a peaceful and secure society, urging citizens to actively support the activities surrounding Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
“Let us seize this opportunity to reaffirm our dedication to creating a community characterized by peace, security, and unity—values that reflect the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces. We must come together as a nation, transcending our differences in ethnicity, religion, and language, to cultivate a spirit of nationalism and brotherhood. The Nigerian Armed Forces epitomize this unity,” he added.
As part of the appeal, the Edo State Government announced an initial contribution of 10 million naira to the emblem fund. Ikhilor urged all citizens to donate generously and wear the emblem with pride, encouraging active participation in the events scheduled for January 15, 2025.
“Your contributions, whether financial, moral, or symbolic, are vital in providing care, rehabilitation, and support for our veterans and the families of those who have fallen in the line of duty,” he concluded.
