Okpebholo Secures Italian Partnership for Youths, Screening Starts March 10

The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has secured government-sponsored vocational training in collaboration with Italy.

The screening process for this initiative is set to begin on March 10, 2025, in Benin City. It is facilitated by Mater Africa, a non-governmental organization, in partnership with the Office of the First Lady of Edo State.

The initiative aims to create job opportunities, alleviate poverty, and boost the state’s Gross Domestic Product. Comrade Solomon Okoduwa, project coordinator for Passport Mattei and former Senior Special Assistant on Anti-Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration, made this announcement in a statement marking Governor Okpebholo’s 100 days in office.

“One of the remarkable achievements within the 100 days of Governor Monday Okpebholo is the developmental project by the Italian government through the Mater Africa organization to train young Edo youth here in Benin City,” Okoduwa stated. He highlighted the project’s potential to address unemployment in the region.

“This project will create jobs, reduce poverty and increase the Gross Domestic Product of Edo State,” he added. The initiative prioritizes reducing youth restiveness, enhancing economic growth, increasing employment opportunities, and facilitating economic activity between Nigeria and Italy.

Recognizing the governor’s dedication, Okoduwa described the Passport Mattei program as a commendable effort to unlock the state’s potential and build a sustainable future. He stated that the project aims to foster the legal and dignified integration of young Nigerians who are potential migrants into Italian society.

Furthermore, he noted, “This project is part of the broader Mattei Plan and a comprehensive initiative by the Italian government to strengthen cooperation between Italy and Africa, with a focus on sustainable development and mutual benefits.”

Passport Mattei operates under the framework of the Italian Immigration Law, specifically adhering to Article 23, and aims to provide innovative solutions for the challenges facing youth in the region.
