Optometrist Urges Computer Users to Prioritize Eye Protection

Dr. Eugene Maxwell, a prominent optometrist based in Warri, has issued a strong recommendation for individuals who frequently use computers to don protective eyewear to mitigate the risk of eye complications. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, Dr. Maxwell emphasized the potential dangers posed by the ultraviolet rays emitted from both computers and mobile phones.

He pointed out that these rays can be harmful to eye health, increasing the likelihood of conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma, which have been on the rise among the general population. Furthermore, Dr. Maxwell highlighted the vulnerability of those who work outdoors, such as street vendors who roast yam and plantains; he advised them to wear hats and sunglasses to shield their eyes from environmental damage.

According to Dr. Maxwell, a troubling lack of awareness regarding these risks contributes to the growing prevalence of eye conditions.

“The eye lens is a fragile organ in the body that starts to degenerate at the age of 40, leading to pacification—a condition that causes part of the body to become opaque,” he explained.

He underscored the importance of early detection, stating, “Early detection of cataracts is crucial in the treatment of the condition.”

Cataracts, characterized by cloudiness of the eye lens that obstructs vision, can arise from various factors, including genetic predisposition and systemic illnesses like diabetes. Dr. Maxwell stressed that adopting a proactive approach to eye health is essential.

“People should practice regular eye checks, avoid smoking, manage health conditions such as diabetes, and maintain a nutritious diet to prevent complications,” he advised.

To further enhance eye health, Dr. Maxwell recommended lifestyle adjustments such as wearing protective hats and sunglasses when outdoors, minimizing alcohol consumption, and incorporating antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C, and E, into their diet. As eye health remains a critical aspect of overall wellbeing, Dr. Maxwell’s insights serve as an important reminder for the public to take preventative measures seriously.
