PANDEF Rejects Unfair Allocation of Funds in 2024 Budget by Niger Delta Ministry to Edo State
The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) Edo State chapter has strongly opposed the budgetary allocation proposed by the Ministry of Niger Delta for the year 2024.
The allocation claims that all projects designated for the state are situated in non-oil producing areas, leading the forum to call on Minister Abubakar Momoh to reverse this injustice, accusing him of misusing his power.
In a statement issued after the steering committee’s meeting in Benin City, signed by Professor Alfred Ehigiegba, Dr. Mike Asemota, and Mr. Isaac Omokaro as spokespersons for the group, PANDEF called for meaningful consultations between the Minister, federal government, and oil producing communities in Edo State to comprehend their needs, challenges, and aspirations.
The statement argues that the actions of the Minister of Niger Delta are unacceptable and detrimental to the development and well-being of the oil-producing communities in Edo State.
It emphasizes that allocating funds for projects in non-oil communities disregards the objectives and principles behind the establishment of the Niger Delta ministry, whose purpose includes alleviating suffering and providing relief to communities impacted by oil production activities.
PANDEF insists on a transparent and accountable explanation from the Minister regarding his decisions, justifying why non-oil communities have been prioritized over the oil-producing communities in Edo State. The forum urges the federal government to ensure fairness and equity in the distribution of resources, particularly in the allocation of project funds. The needs and priorities of the oil-producing communities should receive due consideration.
Furthermore, PANDEF suggests that the Minister and federal government engage in meaningful consultations with the oil-producing communities in Edo State to gain a deep understanding of their needs, challenges, and aspirations. This will ensure that future decisions and project allocations are made with the best interests of these communities in mind.
