PDP’s Ighodalo Alleges “Brazen Theft” of Mandate in Edo Governorship Election

In a resonant statement issued shortly after the conclusion of the Edo State governorship election, the candidate representing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo, has publicly contended that his electoral mandate was unjustly appropriated by individuals he accuses of having detrimental intentions for the state.
The assertion comes in the wake of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declaring Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner of the gubernatorial contest. Ighodalo’s denunciation, made on Monday — just a day after the INEC’s announcement — highlights his commitment to the democratic process and his disappointment regarding the integrity of the election.
Expressing gratitude amidst the turmoil, Ighodalo stated, “First, in all things, we must give thanks to God. We give thanks to God for the gift of life, for health, and for the love you all have shown me.”
He went on to express his sincere appreciation to the citizens of Edo State, acknowledging their steadfastness in the face of adversity, which included inclement weather, threats, and various forms of intimidation.
Ighodalo emphasized, “You are the true heroes of our democracy, and your sacrifices for a better Edo State will never be forgotten.”
He elaborated on his motivations for running, clarifying that his aspirations stemmed from a desire to serve rather than a quest for power.
He stated his mission was to create a “Pathway to Prosperity for All,” underscoring the promises made during his campaign as he traveled extensively to connect with voters across various wards and local government areas.
“Together, we ran a great campaign, and your overwhelming support was evident in the ballots before our progress was unjustly halted on 21st September 2024 by people who do not mean well for you or our state,” Ighodalo lamented.
He characterized the election date as a dark chapter in the region’s political history, marked by what he described as “the brazen theft of our mandate and the shameful subversion of the will of the people.”
Despite the claims of irregularities, Ighodalo urged his supporters to remain resilient and hopeful. “Yet, in the face of this challenge, we must not be discouraged. The illusory triumph of evil over good is only temporary,” he asserted, rallying his base to continue the struggle for a brighter future in Edo State.
