In a bid to strengthen national security, President Bola Tinubu has called for greater collaboration among Nigeria’s security agencies to address crime more effectively.
His remarks were delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the opening ceremony of the 2025 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers held in Abeokuta on Monday.
The conference, themed “Improving Nigeria’s Internal Security and Economic Prosperity Through Inclusive Policing,” underscored the crucial role of unified efforts in combating issues such as banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery.
“Internal security is fundamental to creating an environment where businesses and investment flourish,” Tinubu stated, emphasizing that a collaborative approach is essential for enhancing safety and stability across the nation.
He highlighted his administration’s commitment to bolstering the operational capabilities of security agencies by ensuring they are equipped to manage emergencies and address criminal activities effectively.
“We are committed to fostering economic growth by leveraging the vast potentials of our human and natural resources. However, this vision is unattainable without a stable internal security landscape from states under collaboration,” he noted.
Tinubu further acknowledged ongoing initiatives aimed at bridging gaps in security infrastructure and equipment. These efforts include renovating police barracks, enhancing mobility, and upgrading essential gear for law enforcement personnel.
“These ongoing efforts, complemented by those of state governments, will certainly inspire confidence and reposition the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
The President also underscored the importance of improving the welfare of Nigerian workers, including police officers, through the implementation of a new minimum wage and financial incentives designed to motivate personnel.
“We will continue to collaborate with police leadership to provide financial incentives to motivate officers and all security personnel to perform at their highest level,” he added.
Inspector-General of Police (I-G) Kayode Egbetokun emphasized the conference as an opportunity to evaluate police strategies in light of evolving global security challenges. He noted the need to align objectives with international best practices, highlighting reforms in investigative procedures, forensic analysis, and digital case management.
“Moving forward, all commands and formations have been mandated to implement a comprehensive action plan aimed at reducing crime rates by 50 percent in 2025,” Egbetokun stated.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun commended the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for its dedication to safeguarding lives and property, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies in maintaining peace throughout the state.
