Shaibu calls for full implementation of Edo State Sports Commission Law in LGAs
The Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, is calling for the complete adoption of the Edo State Sports Commission Law by local government councils throughout the state.
At a dynamic meeting with the State Sports Commission, chaired by Yusuf Ali, along with Local Government Councils’ Liaison Officers and Heads of Local Government Administration, Shaibu emphasized the urgent need for the implementation of the state sports program. The state government has set an ambitious goal for the sports commission to produce a staggering 10,000 athletes within five years.
Shaibu urged the Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC) and the heads of administration in all 18 local government councils to swiftly establish sports committees within their respective areas.
Underscoring Governor Godwin Obaseki’s directive, Shaibu explained that the state will prioritize 17 sports but remains open to participating in the rest. The ultimate objective is for Edo State to become a beacon of excellence in these major sports—a hub of sporting brilliance that will set the benchmark for other states across Nigeria.
Acknowledging the crucial role of grassroots involvement, Shaibu stressed the importance of local government councils’ leadership in elevating Edo State sports to unparalleled heights.
He emphasized that such collaboration and joint efforts are essential to achieving the momentous target of discovering and nurturing 10,000 athletes who will represent Edo State and become the pride of the nation.
Shaibu also highlighted the economic significance of sports, citing its potential to generate substantial revenue and boost the nation’s GDP.
The deputy governor expressed a commitment to encouraging private sector participation in sports development within Edo State. He firmly rejected the notion that investing in sports is a wasteful endeavor, emphasizing the government’s determination to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for sports in the state.
Yusuf Ali, Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, proudly noted that FIFA representatives, who recently inspected the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, commended the impressive infrastructure. This recognition has positioned Benin as a strong contender for hosting CAF and FIFA events.
Ali pledged the commission’s readiness to collaborate with local government council leaders to achieve the state government’s vision for sports development.
To streamline the process, sports committees consisting of five members will be established in each of the 18 council areas. These committees will comprise two members appointed by the local government council leadership, a representative from the Local Government Education Authority, a delegate from the private sector to advocate for companies operating in the area, and a nominated member from the Sports Commission who will serve as the Secretary.
With a deadline set for April 11, 2023, local government councils have been urged to submit the names of their nominees promptly. This collaborative approach facilitates effective grassroots engagement and ensures a seamless connection between the state and its councils.
In response, the Local Government Councils Liaison Officers affirmed their unwavering support for the set objectives, expressing their commitment to collaborating closely with the Edo Sports Commission.
Enacted on August 18, 2021, the Edo State Sports Commission Law established a solid foundation for sports development in the region. The sports commission was officially inaugurated on March 11, 2022, with Yusuf Ali assuming the role of Executive Chairman.
Article 20 of the law specifically outlines the establishment of local government sports committees, ensuring a comprehensive and cohesive approach to sports development throughout Edo State.
