President Bola Tinubu has flagged off the dualization of sections two to four of the Ekpoma-Auchi-Okpella-Okene-Ajaokuta Expressway, a project he deems crucial for enhancing socio-economic activities in Edo and Kogi states.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, was represented by Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
During the event, Tinubu highlighted the expressway’s strategic importance, stating that it would greatly facilitate the movement of goods and people between the two states. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving federal roads across the nation to promote national development.
“This road is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu. It is a signature project that will open up this axis for economic and social development,” Umahi remarked.
He assured attendees that roads constructed under this administration are built to last, with a lifespan exceeding 50 years.
Tinubu also praised Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for his ongoing infrastructure initiatives, including a flyover project at Ramat Park in Benin City. He encouraged Okpebholo to persist in his efforts for the benefit of the Edo people, asserting, “Those heading to court are simply wasting their time.”
The president acknowledged the effective collaboration between Governor Okpebholo and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, which he noted was instrumental in advancing the project.
Senator Oshiomhole, a former Edo State Governor, commended Tinubu for prioritizing sustainable infrastructure development. “Previous administrations made us believe that Nigerian roads could not last beyond 10 years. Today, under President Tinubu’s leadership, we are witnessing roads designed to last between 50 and 100 years. This is how sustainable growth is achieved,” he stated.
Oshiomhole emphasized the dualisation’s potential to enhance commerce, transportation, and regional integration between Edo and Kogi states. Governor Okpebholo described the project’s launch as a transformative moment for Edo State, recalling his past protests over the road’s dire condition.
“As someone who resides along this corridor, I understand the pains of the people. Today, that story has changed. Edo people are now experiencing meaningful development,” he remarked, acknowledging Oshiomhole’s steadfast advocacy for the project.
Looking ahead to future elections, Okpebholo urged the people of Edo to show their appreciation through their votes, declaring, “2027 will be the time to thank President Tinubu and the APC for the transformation we are witnessing today.”
He also revealed that the dualised road would feature three lanes, expected to alleviate traffic congestion and further stimulate economic activities in the region.
Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, represented by his deputy, Joel Salifu, also commended Tinubu for initiating a project that promises to spur regional development.
Ododo stated, “This long-awaited road project brings light and hope to communities along this corridor. Once completed, it will ease movement, enhance trade, and foster development in both Kogi and Edo states.”
He described the road as a symbol of renewed connectivity between the two states and a testament to the federal government’s commitment to national development.
