The University of Benin (UNIBEN) expressed profound sadness on Saturday over the death of Elder Statesman and Iconic Leader, Chief Edwin Clark, who passed away on February 17 at the age of 97.
In a heartfelt statement, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, the university’s Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Officer, conveyed the sentiments of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, SAN. Omoregie described Clark’s death as a significant loss for both Nigeria and the academic community.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Chief E.K. Clark. He was not just a nationalist and patriot but a key figure in the history of the University of Benin,” stated Omoregie.
He highlighted Clark’s notable contributions, emphasizing his role as Commissioner for Education in the former Mid-Western region, where he was instrumental in the establishment of the Midwest Institute of Technology, which later evolved into UNIBEN.
Omoregie noted that as a Federal Commissioner, Clark played a crucial part in the university’s successful transition to federal ownership, helping to position it among Nigeria’s leading educational institutions.
“His contributions to education were immeasurable. He didn’t just help build UNIBEN, but later went on to establish the Edwin Clark University in Delta State, showcasing his lifelong dedication to learning,” Omoregie said.
Beyond his contributions to education, Chief Clark was renowned for his advocacy for justice, equity, and national unity throughout his life. Omoregie affirmed that the UNIBEN community stands in solidarity with the nation in mourning this esteemed statesman, offering prayers for the repose of his soul and strength for his grieving family.
