As the curtains close on 2024, the vibrant community of Akoko Edo looks back on a year filled with significant milestones, triumphs, and moments of growth. From historic coronations to ground breaking developments, the past 12 months have been a testament to the resilience, unity, and progress of the people of Akoko-Edo. In this retrospective, we revisit some of the most notable events that shaped the year 2024 in Akoko-Edo, celebrating the achievements, honouring the memories, and reflecting on the lessons learned.
Two Policemen Beaten to Death in Ikpeshi:
In March 2024, a violent altercation in Ikpeshi, Akoko Edo, resulted in the death of two police officers following a fatal accident involving their convoy and a motorcycle. The officers, part of an escort for former Edo State Assembly member Emmanuel Agbaje, were involved in a collision that killed the motorcyclist and his passenger.
Angry youths subsequently attacked the officers at the Edo State Security Volunteer Network office, leading to the deaths of Sergeant Elisha John and Inspector Abubaka Fakkuk. Two other officers were rescued and received medical treatment.
The incident sparked chaos as the mob vandalized the security office and threatened interveners. Edo State Police Public Relations Officer Chidi Nwabuzor confirmed the incident. Akoko-Edo council chairman Tajudeen Alade condemned the violence and assured that those responsible would be held accountable.
Uneme Akiosu Community Crowns New King After 66-Year Wait:
In March 2024, the Uneme Akiosu community in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State celebrated the coronation of their new king, Oba Frederick Lucky Iyogun, known as Iyogu II. This momentous event marked the conclusion of a 66-year interregnum following the death of the previous monarch, Iyogu I. The ceremony was attended by 14 kings from the region, reflecting a collective celebration among local leadership.
The community, the kingmakers, and the Edo State government were recognized for their efforts in resolving the long-standing succession issue. During the festivities, Oba Iyogu II expressed his appreciation to Governor Godwin Obaseki for his crucial role in the coronation process, honouring him with the chieftaincy title “Lover of the People.” The Commissioner for Local Government Affairs also received a chieftaincy title in acknowledgment of his support.
Additionally, Alhaji Sule Idaiye, the Ima of Somorika, spoke on behalf of the attending monarchs, affirming the Council of Traditional Rulers’ commitment to supporting the new king. The ceremony was documented through photographs, capturing the grandeur and significance of this historic occasion.
Akoko-Edo Celebrates New Deputy Governor:
April 2024 – The Akoko-Edo Local Government Area in Edo State celebrated the inauguration of Deputy Governor, High Chief Marvelous Omobayo Godwins, on Saturday April 27 2024. The event, organized by the Akoko-Edo Development Association (AEF) the Akoko-Edo Local Government Council and the Council of Obas, saw community leaders and residents advocating for the establishment of two additional local government councils to enhance governance and development in the historically significant area.
In his address, Deputy Governor Omobayo reflected on the resilience of the Akoko-Edo people and emphasized a commitment to moral governance and community welfare. He assured residents of his dedication to improving their livelihoods and collaborating on strategic initiatives for regional development. Governor Obaseki appointed the 38-year-old Engineer Godwin on April 8, following the impeachment of his predecessor.
Re-Arrest of Sex Offender:
May 2024 – The Braveheart Initiative, a youth-led NGO advocating for sexual and reproductive health and women’s rights, expressed relief following the re-arrest of Jacob Alonge, a fugitive wanted for sexual offenses. Alonge had evaded capture for four years after escaping from custody in Edo State while serving a 21-year sentence for the incestuous rape of his teenage daughter.
Executive Director Priscilla Usiobaifo hailed the re-arrest as a significant victory for justice, particularly for the families of two staff members who tragically died en route to court hearings related to Alonge’s case. She underscored the importance of community support in apprehending him and called on Nigeria’s Correctional Services to enhance security to prevent future escapes.
In a related development Priscilia Usiobaifo was honoured with the Woman of Courage award by the United States Mission Nigeria for her efforts to reform laws and challenge norms facilitating gender-based violence. During the ceremony, she emphasized the need to recognize the contributions of young women, especially in rural areas.
Founded in 2007, the Braveheart Initiative has made significant strides in promoting women’s rights and combating gender-based violence in Edo State, with a focus on improving the criminal justice system.
Edo State Government Congratulates New Olososo of Ososo:
In July 2024, the Edo State Government extended heartfelt congratulations to His Royal Highness, Prince Dele Obaitan, on his historic ascension to the throne of Olososo of Ososo.
In a statement, Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., commended the new ruler and assured him of the government’s support in empowering the local community and preserving its rich cultural heritage.
Ogie praised Prince Dele Obaitan’s previous role as Commissioner for Tourism, Culture, and Diaspora Affairs, expressing confidence that his leadership will benefit the people of Ososo. He concluded by wishing the new monarch a reign characterized by peace and progress, on behalf of the Edo State Government and its Executive Council.
Foundation for Polytechnic School of Mining and Management in Igarra:
In July 2024, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki inaugurated the foundation for the Edo State Polytechnic School of Mining and Management in Igarra, aimed at revitalizing the state’s education sector and enhancing its digital economy. The governor also launched a Digital Resource Center for Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, emphasizing his commitment to improving internet connectivity.
During the event, Obaseki was honoured with the chieftaincy title of Okasime of Igarra Kingdom for his developmental efforts. He reiterated the vital role of education in fostering employment opportunities for youth and announced plans for technical and vocational schools to equip students with necessary skills.
The new polytechnic will offer programs in mining and management, supported by partnerships with Chinese institutions for expertise and training. Addressing concerns over illegal mining, Obaseki announced regulations requiring collaboration between mining companies and local governments.
Community leaders praised Obaseki’s leadership and commitment to education, highlighting its importance for future generations and local development.
Akoko-Edo Anti-Open Grazing Movement Meets Edo State Police Boss, Dismisses allegations:
In September, 2024, the leadership of the Akoko-Edo Anti-Open Grazing Movement, Comrade Aimanerimi Victor Arogunyo, met with the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 5 to address allegations made by a petitioner. The petitioner accused the movement’s leaders of inciting violence against herders, including burning camps, killing cattle, and extorting money. He also claimed that local police, particularly the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ibillo, were improperly detaining movement members.
In response, the movement denied all allegations, asserting that they were victims of land encroachment, violence, and kidnapping by herders. During the meeting, representatives from the Meyiti Allah Association acknowledged their long-standing presence in Akoko-Edo and raised concerns about a 2022 law prohibiting open grazing, which they claimed had not been properly communicated to them.
The discussion highlighted a shift in the relationship between farmers and herders, with herders noting that farmers no longer accepted alternative dispute resolution methods, leading to increased legal actions against them. The AIG emphasized the need to clarify the facts surrounding the ongoing tensions between the two groups.
The Return of Honourable Donald Okogbe:
In October 2024, Honourable Donald Okogbe, the lawmaker for Akoko-Edo II, expressed his gratitude to his constituents and supporters following his reinstatement by the Edo State House of Assembly after a five-month suspension. In a public statement, he acknowledged the unwavering support he received during this challenging time and reaffirmed his dedication to delivering on his promises to the community.
Okogbe emphasized his commitment to progress, stating, “We go again, and this time, we go better and bigger,” and expressed blessings for Akoko-Edo Constituency II, Akoko-Edo, and Edo State.
His suspension had been characterized as “politically motivated,” but with his return alongside fellow lawmaker Adeh Isibor, Okogbe is now focused on fulfilling his campaign commitments.
Hon. Okogbe Donald Honours Uniben Best Graduating Student:
In October 2024, the member representing Akoko Edo Constituency 11 at the State House of Assembly Hon. Donald Okogbe, , honoured Alleh James Ojo a graduate of the University of Benin for his exceptional academic performance as the best graduating student of the University’s 2022/2023 class, achieving a remarkable 4.98/5.0 CGPA. Ojo, from Igarra in Akoko Edo Local Government Area, received a cash award of N1.5 million naira from Hon. Okogbe, who emphasized the importance of supporting Nigeria’s youth.
To further assist Ojo in pursuing his master’s program, the lawmaker announced a crowdfunding campaign aimed at raising a minimum of ten million naira, overseen by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). He called on Edo State citizens and other Nigerians to contribute to Ojo’s educational aspirations.
Previously, Ojo was awarded N1 million naira and named SUBEB Ambassador by Dr. Paddy Iyamu, Chairman of SUBEB. Hon. Okogbe expressed appreciation for Dr. Iyamu’s support and reiterated his commitment to investing in education as vital for the nation’s future.
