Obaseki Reaffirms Open Grazing Ban
In a recent gathering, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State, reiterated the state’s stance on open grazing, emphasizing that the prohibition remains in effect. He cautioned that any violators would be subjected to the full extent of the law.
This statement was made during a dialogue session on the Edo State Regional Development and Benin City Master Plan, which took place in Iguobazuwa, within the Ovia South-West Local Government Area.
Governor Obaseki reaffirmed the government’s dedication to the safety and security of its citizens. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate and support efforts to maintain a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Edo State.
He stated, “Any herdsman in our bush without permission is working against the law of our state, and anything that happens, they can’t blame anyone.”
He further emphasized the need for transparency in granting permissions, stating, “Let us be sure that nobody gives that person permission to enter our forest and if permission is granted, let us know the type of permission given to them to come into our bushes or forest to graze with their cattle.”
He reminded everyone that open grazing is prohibited in Edo State and urged residents to report any sightings of herders in their forests. He assured them of the availability of police and vigilantes who can be reached via a provided contact number to handle such situations.
In his concluding remarks, Governor Obaseki said, “Anybody who wants to do ranching business should contact you, the community people, and you will decide on the land to use and the method of feeding their cattle. They should do business with you and not invade our forest indiscriminately as if there were no owners. The forest and bushes belong to us.”
