The Federal Government has reaffirmed its readiness to partner with the Edo State Government to fully harness and develop the state’s enormous tourism resources for economic growth and cultural promotion.
Dr. Ola Awakan, Director-General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), gave this assurance on Monday in Benin during the opening ceremony of a two-day Tourism Summit, Exhibition, and Fashion Show organised by the Edo Tourism Agency.
Awakan emphasised that Edo’s vast tourism assets — spanning rich cultural heritage, historical monuments, arts and crafts, festivals, and ecological attractions — could only be effectively developed through strong collaboration among government agencies, the private sector, and other key stakeholders.
He noted that tourism remains one of the fastest-growing sectors globally, contributing significantly to job creation, foreign exchange earnings, infrastructure development, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. According to him, Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage presents a golden opportunity to reshape the nation’s global image positively.
“Nigeria is not a country defined by violence or insecurity. We are a people blessed with rich culture, enduring traditions and remarkable artistic heritage,” Dr. Awakan stated.
He expressed confidence that the summit would result in practical strategies and a comprehensive master plan to drive sustainable tourism development.
In her keynote address, Mrs. Vivian Elabor, Director-General of the Edo Tourism Agency, described the gathering as a convergence of investors, tourists, cultural ambassadors, and stakeholders united by a common goal of unlocking Edo’s immense tourism potential.
She highlighted that Edo State has long been recognised as a premier destination for culture, heritage, investment, and sustainable development, thanks to its unique blend of historical significance, vibrant festivals, and natural attractions.
Elabor commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his strong support for the tourism sector and for recognising its strategic importance in achieving economic diversification under the SHINE Agenda. She invited investors and development partners to explore the numerous opportunities available in the state.
The Secretary to the Edo State Government, Mr. Musa Ikhilor, also addressed the summit, drawing attention to the state’s numerous tourism assets and the urgent need to digitise and promote them for greater visibility and economic impact.
He encouraged residents to actively serve as tourism ambassadors by showcasing Edo’s historical monuments, cultural heritage, and attractions to attract more visitors and boost the local economy.
The high-level event is expected to foster meaningful partnerships, investment deals, and innovative ideas that will position Edo State as a leading tourism hub in Nigeria. Stakeholders anticipate that the outcomes will significantly contribute to job creation, cultural preservation, and sustainable development in the state.
