The Edo State House of Assembly’s Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Chief) Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku, has expressed his admiration for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their steadfast commitment to supporting other security agencies in their fight against crime in the state.
Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku made this statement during a meeting with the state commandant and other senior officials of the NSCDC at his office.
While acknowledging the inherent risks associated with combating crime, the Speaker praised the agency’s effectiveness and assured them of the Assembly’s willingness to collaborate to facilitate their work.
He called on all residents and natives to provide the necessary information to the agency, emphasizing that without such information, the NSCDC would be hindered in performing its duties. He also assured the full cooperation of all members of the eighth Assembly.
The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Edo State Command, Gbenga Agun, who took up his official duties in Edo State about 100 days prior, explained that his visit to the leadership of the state House of Assembly was part of a familiarization tour. He further clarified that the NSCDC is legally mandated to protect critical assets and infrastructure around the clock, including pipelines, refineries, and electricity cables, among others.
Commandant Gbenga Agun also revealed that the agency, through the honourable minister of interior, is tasked with licensing private security companies, managing disasters, and enforcing law and order in general.
He highlighted the recently introduced agro-rangers, established in 2016 following clashes between farmers and herders, as well as insurgent attacks on farmers. The leader of the team in Edo State, E. Ojile, announced that with the arrival of the new Commandant, the Agro Rangers are prepared to begin full operations in the state.
Present to welcome the NSCDC team were the representative for Etsako West 2, Hon. Abdul Ganiyu Akokhia; the clerk of the House, Alhaji Yahaya Audu Omogbai, and the Speaker’s immediate staff and political appointees.
