Shaibu Denies Involvement in Benin Attack, Resumes Duties Amid Controversy
The reinstated Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu has vehemently denied involvement in the deadly attack in Benin that claimed the life of Police Inspector Akor Onuh. Shaibu, who has resumed duties from home, expressed shock at the accusation, emphasizing his commitment to a peaceful resolution.
He said, “They claimed that I was the one who planned the attack but I came into Benin peacefully, from Abuja. Why were the armed thugs laying ambush for me? Were they expecting a visitor? I have filed a defamation lawsuit for N5 billion against the governor, Nehikhare, and Osagie. Next week, they will be served.
“To avoid any conflict, I have resumed, called back all of my aides, and I will be working from home. I am still the deputy governor. All entitlements and salaries will be paid.”
He said, “Philip Shaibu is still impeached as the Deputy Governor of Edo State until the Appeal Court rules differently,
“More importantly, law enforcement officers execute a court order rather than the parties concerned.
“However, Philip Shaibu organized thugs with sophisticated weapons both inside and outside the airport compound in a flagrant disregard for the stay of execution and for law and order. His goal was to make a show of returning to Benin after the court ruling, wreaking havoc on the populace and inciting chaos in the State under the pretense of carrying out the Federal High Court’s ruling.
“Using the intelligence at his disposal, the State Commissioner of Police raced to the airport, met with Shaibu, and told him about the filed stay of execution that he was in possession of. He had originally planned to march to the Edo State Government House, but he was advised against doing so.
“Shaibu was disappointed by this development and disregarded the Commissioner of Police’s advice and warnings. He left the airport precincts and entered the waiting crowd of thugs, who accompanied him into the city, where they shot intermittently and caused mayhem among innocent citizens who were going about their lawful business.”
