#EndBadGovernance: Obaseki Urges Alternative Forms of Protest

In a recent address, Governor Godwin Obaseki acknowledged the widespread discontent among Nigerians, citing “difficult living conditions” and “palpable tension” as reasons for the #EndBadGovernance protests.

He said, “The policies implemented by the Federal Government have taken a severe toll on citizens, resulting in astronomically high food prices, high transportation costs, galloping inflation, and loss of operating capital by small business owners.

“It has become evident that many policy measures were not properly thought through, leading to adverse consequences that have put our people in dire straits.”

Obaseki expressed disappointment with the federal government’s fiscal and monetary policy management, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies without proper planning, which has led to extreme poverty and hardship for millions of Nigerians.

In Edo State, Governor Obaseki highlighted measures taken to alleviate suffering, including raising the minimum wage to N70,000, introducing free transport schemes, and providing free Wi-Fi services. Despite these efforts, he acknowledged that citizens still face significant challenges due to prevailing macroeconomic conditions.

While recognizing the right to protest, Obaseki appealed for peaceful demonstrations without disrupting public peace or destroying property. He warned against allowing miscreants to hijack protests and cause destruction, citing intelligence reports of planned disruptions and destruction of public infrastructure.

“I urge protest organizers to consider alternative forms of protest. I have mobilized security agencies to ensure law and order are maintained and provide protection for genuine protesters.” Governor Obaseki said.

The Governor assured law-abiding citizens of their safety, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property while working towards the state’s growth and progress.
