Edo Election: Security Forces on High Alert as 35,000 Police Officers Arrive
In preparation for the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, a massive deployment of 35,000 police officers has arrived in the state to maintain law and order.

This substantial security presence is complemented by soldiers and personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), ensuring a hitch-free electoral process.
Seventeen political parties have put forward candidates for the governorship election, among which three dominate the discourse. Noteworthy candidates include Senator Monday Okpebholo representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asue Ighodalo from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party. Their prominence in the contest highlights the competitive landscape that voters will navigate as they head to the polls.
In a strategic move, the Defence Headquarters has articulated the rationale behind deploying military personnel. The initiative primarily aims to foster a secure environment conducive for the electorate’s participation in the election process. Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, provided insights during an interview with The PUNCH, emphasizing the military’s pivotal role in preventing electoral violence and maintaining peace during a critical democratic exercise.
Maj. Gen. Buba stated, “During elections, troops are required to provide security in order to encourage high voter turnout as well as ensure the safety of voters. The forthcoming election in Edo will not be an exception. The military is resolute on taking steps to ensure a hitch-free election in Edo State.”
His comments encapsulate the proactive measures being adopted to mitigate potential conflicts and ensure that citizens can exercise their democratic rights without fear.
