The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) has announced a strategic partnership with Eutelsat, a global frontrunner in satellite communications, aimed at providing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services across Nigeria. This collaboration was officially disclosed by Aisha Bantam, the Head of Corporate Affairs at NIGCOMSAT, during a press briefing held in Abuja on Wednesday.
With this alliance, NIGCOMSAT is poised to solidify its position as Nigeria’s foremost satellite service provider, leveraging the advanced capabilities of the OneWeb LEO network to offer high-speed and low-latency connectivity. The initiative is expected to have widespread benefits for government entities, businesses, and rural communities, significantly improving remote communication capabilities, mobile connectivity, and offshore operations.
Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, hailed the partnership as a pivotal advancement in enhancing satellite communication technology within Nigeria.
“This partnership marks a major milestone for NIGCOMSAT, allowing us to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide with OneWeb’s advanced LEO satellite technology. Together, we will deliver scalable and reliable connectivity solutions to drive growth across government services, businesses, and communities nationwide,” she stated.
Egerton-Idehen also underscored the collaboration’s reflection of the robust relationship between Nigeria and France in the domain of satellite and space technologies. She added that by combining their respective resources, Eutelsat and NIGCOMSAT aim to spur innovation, expedite digital transformation, and broaden connectivity opportunities both within Nigeria and internationally.
“NIGCOMSAT is Nigeria’s leading satellite communications provider, dedicated to delivering top-tier satellite services to empower industries and communities. Its flagship NigComSat-1R satellite supports critical sectors such as communication, education, health, and security,” she noted.
Eutelsat Group, noted for its leadership in satellite communications, merged with OneWeb in 2023 to establish itself as the first fully integrated GEO-LEO satellite operator. The group now operates a diverse fleet comprising 35 geostationary satellites alongside a constellation of over 600 LEO satellites, catering to a broad array of customers across video streaming, mobile connectivity, fixed connectivity, and government services.
