Edo State’s tax authority is seeking collaboration with the Nigerian Police, Edo Command, to boost tax compliance. Oladele Bankole-Balogun, Executive Chairman of the Edo Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), made the appeal during a courtesy visit to Edo Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, in Benin on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Bankole-Balogun highlighted the EIRS’s success in achieving its January revenue target of N10 billion. However, he emphasized the importance of police cooperation in maintaining compliance with tax regulations.
“The role of law enforcement in tax compliance cannot be over-emphasised. A well-structured partnership with the Police will strengthen our enforcement mechanisms and enhance revenue collection,” he stated.
Commissioner Otimenyin responded positively to the request, recognizing the significant contributions of the revenue service to the state’s development. She assured Bankole-Balogun of the police command’s commitment to supporting and partnering with the EIRS for effective and sustainable internally generated revenue (IGR) collection.
“The Edo Police Command is committed to supporting lawful revenue collection. Effective collaboration between security agencies and tax authorities will ensure a seamless enforcement process,” she affirmed.
Following the meeting with the police, Bankole-Balogun also led EIRS leadership to engage with the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), seeking further collaboration and support for the agency’s operations. This outreach underscores the EIRS’s proactive approach in fostering partnerships to enhance tax compliance and revenue generation in Edo State.
