In a significant move to empower women and boost the state economy, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved N1 billion in soft loans specifically targeted at market women across the state. The announcement coincided with celebrations marking International Women’s Day (IWD), underscoring the administration’s commitment to accelerating gender equality and supporting women’s economic advancement.
Speaking at an IWD event in Benin City, Governor Okpebholo lauded Edo women for their unwavering dedication and contribution to the state’s progress. He emphasized the crucial role women play in the state’s development, stating, “We can actually do nothing as men without the women, and that was why when a memo came before me on soft loan approval, I quickly approved N1 billion for our market women.”
The governor assured attendees that the disbursement process is already underway, with relevant financial institutions engaged to ensure the funds reach eligible Edo women. “The process is already ongoing, and we are talking to the relevant financial institution for disbursement as the money is ready and it is credited only to Edo women,” he confirmed.
He further expressed confidence in the integrity and reliability of Edo women, noting, “The women are truthful and straightforward. When they assure you of their backing, just relax and be assured that you will get their backing, especially during the election. Their words are firm.”
Edesili Anani Okpebholo, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, echoed the governor’s sentiments, urging Edo women to remain vocal and proactive in pursuing their goals.
“Edo women [must] never be silent, pushed back, shut down, or strangled, as their voices must be heard because they matter,” she stated, calling on women to add value and demonstrate commitment in all their endeavors.
Anani Okpebholo also commended the governor for his decisive action in ensuring equal opportunities and justice for women in Edo State. Highlighting the significance of the annual celebration, she stated, “We are all gathered here to celebrate the achievements of women and renew the call for transformative change. The celebration reminds us of the incredible progress made by women and the world.”
This year’s IWD theme, “Accelerate action,” resonates deeply with the Governor’s initiative. Anani Okpebholo emphasized that the theme is “not a mere slogan but a call for urgent inclusion, decisive change, and collaborative efforts.”
She called for a united front to dismantle barriers hindering women’s progress, including systemic inequality, violence against women and girls, and economic disparity. “It is our duty to dismantle these obstacles in our environment,” she urged.
