The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has lauded the Election Petition Tribunal’s decision to uphold the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo in the recent Edo State gubernatorial election. The commendation was given during a solidarity visit by Governor Okpebholo to the Oba’s Palace in Benin City on Thursday.
During the visit, the Oba characterized Governor Okpebholo as a “true traditional son of the land,” emphasizing his deep connection to Edo State’s heritage and traditions. Speaking primarily in the Edo language, Oba Ewuare invoked the blessings of his ancestors, stating, “It shall be well with you, your wife, and children. Your journey to Edo, our ancestors approved it.”
He further stated, “Our ancestors brought you to restore the lost glory of Edo State, which evildoers wanted. We have been praying, and we will continue to pray for you not to allow evil forces to destroy Edo.”
The Oba expressed confidence that Governor Okpebholo’s administration would usher in a period of renewed development and prosperity for the state. He physically assisted Governor Okpebholo, who was kneeling in appreciation, to stand, underscoring his support and blessing.
In response, Governor Okpebholo expressed his gratitude to the Oba for his unwavering affection and prayers for him and the state. He described the tribunal’s ruling as “historic and the sweetest judgment ever” in history, emphasizing its significance for the future of Edo State.
“This is the first time we have seen a judgment where all the judges agreed that I won the election,” Governor Okpebholo noted, highlighting the unanimous decision of the three-member panel of justices. He attributed the victory to divine intervention and the overwhelming support of the people of Edo State.
