The Edo State Government, through its Ministry for Mining, has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering mining host communities through the robust implementation of Community Development Agreements (CDAs) with all relevant stakeholders.
The declaration came during a meeting in Benin City, where the State Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, engaged with representatives of kindreds from Okpeila Community.
Commissioner Ijegbai assured the community representatives that the administration led by Senator Monday Okpebholo is dedicated to ensuring that CDAs signed by companies accurately reflect the needs and desires of host communities.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the state government will meticulously monitor the implementation of these agreements to guarantee their full execution.
“It has become necessary for the State Government to lead this process to protect the rights of all individuals involved when CDAs are signed by communities and companies. The state government will not condone victimization of its citizens by companies that come to establish themselves in communities across the state.” Hon. Ijegbai stated.

Leaders from Okpeila Community, including High Chief Tunde Ajie and Prince Anthony Oba, expressed their gratitude to the Commissioner for convening the meeting and providing a platform to voice their concerns regarding the existing CDA with BUA Group. Their concerns included issues of proper representation, internal disagreements, and feelings of marginalization.
Specifically, the Awoyemi Ruling House and the Imiokpe Kindred requested individual CDAs with BUA to ensure independent management of funds. The Imiokpe Community further highlighted the disparity between the community’s infrastructure and the BUA camp, citing poor road conditions, inadequate water supply, and unreliable electricity compared to the BUA camp’s round-the-clock electricity access.
“Our issues included lack of proper representation, in-house disagreements, and marginalization, amongst others,” explained High Chief Tunde Ajie, emphasizing the need for equitable distribution of benefits from mining activities.
Mr. Omoruyi Ihianle, the Director of Mining, expressed his appreciation to the kindreds for accepting the Ministry’s invitation, framing it as the beginning of a constructive and collaborative relationship between the Ministry and the Community.
The meeting concluded with a request for the draft agreements prepared by the various kindreds. The Ministry is implementing measures to safeguard against breaches by stakeholders, reinforcing the State Government’s commitment to a prosperous Edo State through responsible and equitable resource management.
