The Edo State Government has announced the removal of three traditional rulers across two local government areas for alleged violations of extant traditional and legal regulations. The announcement, made on Monday by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Umar Ikhilor, impacts traditional leadership positions in Etsako West and Etsako East Local Government Areas.
According to the statement, Umoru Inusa Umoru has been removed as the Aidenogie of South Ibie in Etsako West. His removal stems from the alleged discovery that the Aidenogie stool was not vacant at the time of his appointment. Concurrently, Alhaji Aliyu Kelvin Danesi has been immediately reinstated to the position of Aidenogie of South Ibie.
In Etsako East, Lukman Akemokue has been removed as the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella for allegedly contravening succession laws established under customary declarations. The government alleges that Akemokue’s ascension to the throne did not comply with Bendel State Legal Notice 132 of 1979, which guides traditional succession in the area.
Furthermore, Dr. George Oshiapi Egabor has been removed as the Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom, Agenebode, also in Etsako East Local Government. Egabor’s removal follows his prior suspension due to repeated incidents of kidnappings and killings reportedly occurring within his domain.
The Edo State Executive Council reportedly approved these revocations at its meeting held on Tuesday, April 29th.
The statement from the SSG further indicated that preparations are underway to commence the lawful selection process for a new Okuokpellagbe of Okpella and Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom. The government is urging citizens of the affected areas to remain peaceful and law-abiding as it works to preserve order, unity, prosperity, and communal harmony throughout the state. Further updates on the selection process are expected to be released in due course.
