The Edo State Ministry of Justice has announced significant achievements over the past seven months, securing 13 criminal convictions and over 22 civil litigation judgments in favor of the State.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Samson Osagie, revealed these accomplishments during a press briefing on Monday, highlighting the ministry’s performance across various departments.
The Department of Public Prosecutions successfully prosecuted cases resulting in 13 criminal convictions with varying sentences, including imprisonment and death sentences. Furthermore, appellate courts upheld 10 criminal appeal cases filed by the department.
Dr. Osagie noted that the department is currently prosecuting 2,040 criminal cases, with 241 cases filed in respect of sundry matters and an additional 87 rape cases.
In the realm of civil litigation, the ministry’s efforts resulted in 22 judgments in the state’s favor, covering a range of disputes, including employment and labor matters, contractual issues, and land disputes.
The Department of Civil Litigation defended the State in over 253 civil cases pending at various High Courts. Dr. Osagie also mentioned that some matters were resolved amicably through consent judgments.
Beyond litigation, the ministry has been actively involved in drafting and reviewing bills, including the Edo State Parks and Agency Bill and the Edo State Lottery Commission Bill. It has also mediated and intervened in over 27 chieftaincy matters and rendered legal opinions on several chieftaincy disputes.
The Department of Citizens’ Rights concluded 101 cases, demonstrating the ministry’s commitment to protecting human rights. The Citizens’ Mediation Centre resolved 50 cases through mediation, promoting alternative dispute resolution within the state.
Dr. Osagie emphasized that, with the support of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, the ministry aims to sustain and surpass these achievements. He affirmed the administration’s commitment to ensuring the course of justice in Edo State remains unhindered.
