In a proactive move to bolster road safety, Dangote Cement Plc has conducted intensive screening exercises for over 1,500 of its truck drivers. The screenings are designed to rigorously assess their mental, psychological, and physical fitness, ensuring they meet the highest standards for safe driving practices.
The initiative was revealed by Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement Plc, Arvind Pathak, during his presentation at the 2025 Annual Drivers Retreat held in Ilaro, Ogun State. Pathak emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to the safety of its drivers and all road users.
“Every driver employed by Dangote Cement is required to undergo an extensive and rigorously structured recruitment process,” Pathak stated. He outlined the comprehensive screening process, which includes a valid Driver’s license class G, thorough background verification of both the driver and their guarantors, and a comprehensive medical evaluation.
The medical assessment encompasses vision screening (eye test), blood pressure checks, BMI (body mass index), RBS (random blood sugar test), as well as drug and alcohol testing.
Pathak added, “In the past two months alone, over 1,500 prospective drivers have successfully completed this process. Only those who met all required standards were engaged and certified to operate any Dangote Group vehicles. Our commitment to safety extends beyond recruitment. All drivers undergo mandatory pre-trip medical assessments, conducted by licensed nurses and doctors.”
The management of Dangote Cement Plc has reaffirmed its commitment to the continuous training and retraining of its drivers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary for safe and efficient driving throughout Nigeria.
Pathak highlighted that as a leading cement manufacturer with a large fleet of trucks, Dangote Cement recognizes its responsibility to ensure the safety of all road users. The company is dedicated to road safety, transparency, ethical conduct, and providing clear information about the comprehensive systems and procedures in place to mitigate incidents on Nigerian roads.
“Dangote is a responsible organization that consistently cooperates with the Nigeria Police and other relevant authorities in the investigation of reported incidents,” Pathak affirmed. He emphasized the company’s support for lawful processes aimed at establishing facts and routinely implementing recommendations to strengthen public safety.
The rigorous screening process also includes a three-month detection window for substance use, identifying any history of substance use before employment. Successful candidates then complete a two-week intensive training program, consisting of twelve safety modules, practical driving assessments, and written examinations. Through these measures, Dangote Cement aims to maintain the highest standards of safety and professionalism within its driving workforce.
