The Edo State branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has declared an immediate withdrawal of medical services across the state, effective Saturday.
This action follows the abduction of two medical doctors in separate incidents on January 1st and 2nd, prompting grave concerns regarding the safety and security of healthcare professionals in Edo State.
Dr. Eustace Oseghale, Chairman of the Edo NMA, announced the decision in a formal statement released Friday. He cited the escalating insecurity and the vulnerability of medical practitioners as the primary reasons for the service suspension.
One of the kidnapped doctors, Dr. Babatunde Abu, was abducted in Auchi. Reports indicate that his abductors are demanding a ransom of N100 million for his release.
These incidents have triggered widespread alarm within the medical community, highlighting the risks faced by those providing essential healthcare services.
The NMA is demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted doctors. Furthermore, the association is calling for enhanced security measures for all residents of Edo State and a sustained dialogue between the Edo State Government and the NMA to address the ongoing security challenges that impact healthcare delivery.
Dr. Oseghale emphasized that the suspension of services will remain in effect until their demands are met. “We will continue to withhold services until our colleagues are released and adequate security measures are implemented,” he stated.
The NMA is urging a swift resolution and expects security agencies to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves. The association maintains that a safe working environment is non-negotiable for healthcare providers in the state.
