The Federal Government has recommenced the dualization of the Lokoja–Benin Road, focusing on the Obajana Junction to Benin section. This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to providing robust and sustainable infrastructure nationwide.
Following the termination of underperforming contracts, work on this crucial highway restarted in February 2025, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate for a lasting resolution to the road’s persistent issues.
The project utilizes Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) technology, ensuring a lifespan of 50 to 100 years and minimizing frequent repairs.
Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, announced that the project is divided into four sections and assigned to CGC Nigeria Ltd, BUA Construction Nigeria Ltd, and CBC Nigeria Ltd for efficient execution. Construction is actively underway across these sections.
The dualization aims to restore full motorability on the Lokoja–Benin corridor, alleviate transportation challenges, and improve safety for road users. Umahi emphasized the road’s importance as a vital economic link between the North-Central and South-South regions, anticipating that its rehabilitation will significantly stimulate trade, commerce, and economic activity in Kogi and Edo States.
Engr. Umahi reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritizing quality and longevity in road construction. The adoption of CRCP technology signifies a move toward infrastructure offering long-term value and reliability.
The reconstruction of the Lokoja–Benin Road, which has long suffered from deterioration, congestion, and accidents, provides significant relief to motorists, transporters, and communities along its route.
