A prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Emmanuel Ogidi, has voiced serious concerns over the escalating political tension in Edo State, calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into recent events.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, held in Abuja, Chief Ogidi described the emerging hostilities targeting key political figures as a “bad omen” for Nigeria’s democratic process, particularly with the 2027 general elections on the horizon.
He emphasized that the reported targeting of individuals such as Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and leaders within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was entirely unacceptable.
Chief Ogidi has urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action by directing security agencies to investigate credible reports of threats against ADC members. He stressed the importance of prosecuting those found responsible for instigating these threats and acts of intimidation.
“It is unfortunate that we have reduced political contests to this level,” Ogidi stated, highlighting a disturbing trend of escalating violence in the political arena. He referenced disruptions caused by alleged political thugs during recent elections in the Abaji Area Council of Abuja, emphasizing the need for accountability.
Ogidi also appealed to political actors to embrace tolerance and end the culture of “personal entitlement” that he believes is fueling the current unrest. He warned that the current climate of fear and intimidation could discourage participation in future elections, a situation he believes must be avoided at all costs.
Despite the troubling developments, Ogidi urged Nigerians to remain resolute and not succumb to fear. “Nigeria belongs to all of us,” he declared, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding the nation’s democracy.
