No fewer than 800 residents of Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State are set to benefit from a free medical outreach organised by Edo State University, Iyamoh.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Victor Adetimirin, disclosed this on Wednesday at the flag-off of the three-day Community Medical Outreach held within the university.
The outreach, themed “Bringing Quality Healthcare to Your Doorstep,” is being conducted across five host communities— Iyamoh, Ogbido, Iyora, Elele and Uluoke.
Adetimirin said the initiative underscored the university’s commitment to improving the well-being of residents in its host communities, particularly the indigent.
According to him, the programme is designed to provide accessible and quality healthcare services to people at the grassroots who may otherwise be unable to afford such care.
“The three-day medical outreach is organised by the university for communities around the institution,” he said. “It is aimed at promoting the well-being of indigent persons by granting them access to quality healthcare services.”
He urged residents of the benefiting communities to take full advantage of the initiative to address their health needs.
Also speaking, the Head of the Medical Team, Dr. Isaac Omoregbe, said the outreach targets about 800 patients with various health conditions across the five communities.
Omoregbe, a public health physician, explained that the services include free medical consultations, screenings and treatment.
He listed some of the medical services to include screening for blood pressure, hypertension and diabetes, as well as tests for malaria and hepatitis B and C. Other conditions to be treated, he said, include upper respiratory tract infections, arthritis and general body pains, alongside the distribution of free medications.
“The essence of the programme is to bring free medical services to the doorstep of people who ordinarily cannot afford them,” he said.
He further advised residents to maintain proper personal hygiene and ensure environmental cleanliness as preventive measures against disease outbreaks.
Some beneficiaries who spoke at the event commended the university for the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.
“This is a commendable initiative by Edo State University, Iyamoh. We appreciate the Vice-Chancellor and his management for this gesture,” one of the beneficiaries said.
