Senator Seriake Dickson, the National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), issued a strong warning against “transactional politics” on Thursday as the party formally welcomed serving lawmakers from Edo State into its fold.
The event, held in Abuja, was attended by a diverse group of political figures and delegates from various states. The highlight was the official reception of Charity Aiguobarueghian, the Minority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly, and Natasha Osawaru-Idibia into the NDC.
In his address, Senator Dickson emphasized that the NDC was founded on principles far exceeding the pursuit of fleeting political advantages. He described it as a movement deeply rooted in ideology, discipline, and a long-term commitment to nation-building.
“You are not merely joining this party; you are becoming co-founders and co-builders,” Dickson stated. “This is not a platform for transactional politics. It is a platform for ideological commitment and nation-building.”
He urged the new members to view their involvement as part of a lasting political endeavor, highlighting the crucial role of strong grassroots organization in ensuring the survival and success of any political movement. He likened a political party to a horse, stating that even the most skilled rider cannot win a race with a weak or untrained horse. Political parties, he asserted, are “living institutions” that require continuous nurturing to thrive.
The event featured the symbolic presentation of party membership cards to Aiguobarueghian and Osawaru-Idibia.
Aiguobarueghian explained that his decision to join the NDC was the result of careful ideological consideration following a period of uncertainty within his previous political affiliation.
“At some point, I began to question whether our core beliefs were still viable. I felt mocked, and there seemed to be no clear path forward,” he said. He stressed that his move was motivated not by personal ambition but by a desire to serve within a more stable and value-driven political structure.
“I am delighted to be welcomed into a house where my values will not be compromised, where I can serve without suppressing my intellectual capacity,” Aiguobarueghian added.
Osawaru-Idibia echoed this sentiment, expressing her belief that the NDC is a movement capable of positively transforming Nigeria’s political landscape. “Politics has been challenging, but we thank God for remaining steadfast,” she said.
“I have a leader whose values serve as his compass. He constantly reminds me of the youth and the direction in which this country should be heading.”
She reaffirmed her commitment to the party despite the current political challenges. “We may stumble, but we will rise again. With God’s help, the NDC will lead Nigeria to a brighter future,” she declared.
Former Deputy Governor of Gombe, John Yoriyo, characterized the lawmakers’ decision as part of a broader realignment within Nigeria’s opposition. “This is a turning point for Nigeria,” he stated.
“We are witnessing the genesis of a political movement dedicated to reshaping how leadership is cultivated and sustained.” Yoriyo added that the movement aims to create opportunities for all citizens, regardless of their background, and to promote generational change in leadership.
