The Edo State government has rolled out a sweeping set of initiatives designed to dramatically improve traffic flow, bolster passenger safety, and instil a new era of orderliness within the state’s diverse transportation system.
These far-reaching reforms, announced by the Commissioner for Transportation, Saturday Uwuilekhue, signal a proactive approach to modernising urban and inter-city mobility.
A cornerstone of the new strategy involves the comprehensive profiling of commercial transport operators. This critical step aims to create a centralised database, facilitating better planning, enhanced security measures, and more effective regulation across the sector. As part of this initiative, operators will be issued unique security identification numbers, a move expected to significantly improve passenger safety and streamline the identification process for transport providers.
Commissioner Uwuilekhue emphasised the administration’s commitment to rigorous enforcement against practices that contribute to congestion and disorder. Stricter penalties will now be applied to illegal parking, as well as unauthorised loading and unloading of passengers. These measures are designed to reclaim public spaces and ensure the free flow of traffic, particularly in bustling urban areas.
A significant policy shift highlighted by the commissioner is the outright ban on unregistered commercial vehicles. This mandate seeks to foster uniformity, proper identification, and accountability within the transport ecosystem.
Uwuilekhue reported impressive compliance, stating that over 80 per cent of commercial buses and tricycles are now operating within the approved state colours, indicating widespread adoption of the new regulations.
Beyond enforcement, the Edo State government is actively expanding its public transportation offerings. The revitalised Edo Line transport service has seen a substantial boost with the acquisition of approximately 100 new buses, with an additional 50 expected to join the fleet soon.
Furthermore, a commitment to sustainable and affordable transport is evident with the recent delivery of 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses. These environmentally friendly vehicles are set to improve both intra-city and inter-city connectivity, offering residents more economical commuting options.
Addressing ongoing traffic challenges, existing restrictions on the movement of heavy-duty vehicles during peak hours along major roads and market corridors will be rigorously enforced. Similarly, regulations limiting the operation of motorcycles and tricycles on designated metropolitan roads remain in effect, underscoring the government’s multi-faceted approach to urban traffic management.
Looking to the future, the Ministry of Transportation is actively engaging with private investors and development partners on a range of projects. These include the revitalisation of courier services, the establishment of modern parking facilities, and the development of state-of-the-art transit parks.
In a move towards technology-driven solutions, the Commissioner also unveiled the EdoRide app, an innovative platform designed to provide ride-hailing and intercity transportation services. This digital initiative is expected to offer residents greater convenience and accessibility in their travel needs.
Commissioner Uwuilekhue concluded by reaffirming the government’s unwavering dedication to fostering a transport sector characterised by safety, efficiency, and orderliness for all Edo State residents.
