The Edo State Police Command has arrested three individuals in connection with the alleged torture and death of a 15-year-old girl who was brought from Benue State to work as a domestic helper in Benin City.
The victim, identified as Tyowase Joy Mfena, reportedly succumbed to severe injuries sustained from prolonged maltreatment at her place of work. The tragic incident has triggered widespread outrage, particularly among the Tiv community in Edo State, with many residents calling for swift justice and the prosecution of all those involved.
Confirming the arrests, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, stated that operatives acted swiftly on credible intelligence. On June 5, 2026, three suspects were taken into custody for their alleged roles in the teenager’s death.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the prime suspect, Glory Amadasun, accused the 15-year-old of stealing the sum of ₦200,000 before subjecting her to brutal physical assault, which allegedly led to her demise.
Ikoedem noted that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals suspected to have fled after the incident. The victim’s remains have been deposited at Stella Obasanjo Hospital for proper preservation and autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
According to community sources, Joy was brought to Benin from Benue State along with two other girls — Tyowase Miriam Nguevese and Dose Ishor Zua — by a man identified as Moti Tyowuese, popularly known as Anosa, from Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Joy hailed from the Ipav community in Mbagyur, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State. She was the daughter of Mr. Tyowase Zua and Mrs. Tyowase Mkegh. She was reportedly working in a household at Ogobi Community along Sapele Road in Benin City.
Sources allege that the young girl died as a result of injuries sustained from repeated maltreatment. The case was first reported at the Love World Police Station under Obe Division before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a more thorough probe.
The transfer followed the intervention of prominent Tiv leaders in Edo, including the Ter u Tiv Edo, Chief Iordye, and the President of Tiv Youths in the State, Mr. Agber Akaajime.
Investigators are working to trace and arrest additional persons connected to the case. The Edo Police Command has assured that the investigation remains active and that all culpable individuals will be brought to justice.
The incident has sparked strong condemnation and heightened calls for the protection of vulnerable children, especially those working as domestic helpers far from their families. Community leaders and residents continue to demand a transparent process and full accountability for the death of the teenager.
