Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has expressed strong disapproval over the recent kidnapping incident at the popular Vegetable Market area along Airport Road in Benin, describing it as a disturbing and unacceptable assault on law-abiding citizens.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the governor conveyed his deep concern over the Sunday incident and reiterated his administration’s firm commitment to the safety and security of all residents in the state.
Governor Okpebholo has directed the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, to immediately initiate a thorough, coordinated, and swift investigation into the matter. The primary objectives are to ensure the safe and timely rescue of the abducted victims and to bring all those responsible for the crime to justice.
“The governor has made it clear that his administration will not tolerate any actions that threaten the peace, security, and well-being of the people of Edo State,” the statement emphasised.
The governor urged residents across the state to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or security agency. He noted that such timely information from members of the public plays a vital role in supporting ongoing security operations and preventing future incidents.
Governor Okpebholo assured citizens that his government will continue to work relentlessly with security agencies until the perpetrators are apprehended and made to face the full consequences of their actions under the law.
This latest condemnation comes amid broader efforts by the state government to strengthen security and restore public confidence in high-risk areas. The Airport Road corridor, known for its bustling commercial activities including the Vegetable Market, has seen increased security attention in recent times.
The Edo State Government called on all residents to cooperate fully with security operatives as investigations progress, emphasising that collective vigilance remains key to tackling criminal elements and maintaining peace in the state.
