The Edo State House of Assembly on Wednesday confirmed Mr. Anayochukwu (Martin) Oli, a businessman and community leader from Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, as a Commissioner-nominee of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The confirmation followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Ibhamawu, during plenary in Benin City.
Speaker Blessing Agbebaku lauded Governor Okpebholo for prioritising competence over ethnic origin in his appointments. “What matters is quality and efficiency, not where one comes from,” the Speaker noted. He expressed optimism that Oli’s credentials and experience would enable him to contribute meaningfully to the development of Edo State.
Other lawmakers echoed similar sentiments, commending the governor for placing service delivery and merit above sectional considerations in the formation of his cabinet.
Leaders of the Igbo community in Edo, who were present at the session in solidarity with the nominee, described him as a versatile, goal-oriented, and dedicated individual with a proven track record of community service.
Oli, an established entrepreneur, has built a strong reputation as a passionate advocate for the Igbo community in Edo. He has consistently supported various grassroots development initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and creating economic opportunities for residents.
The confirmation of a non-indigene into the State Executive Council is being viewed as a bold step towards fostering unity, inclusiveness, and broader participation in governance.
The nominee’s appointment is expected to proceed to formal swearing-in after completing all necessary legislative processes. This development has been widely welcomed as a positive signal for national unity and inclusive leadership at the state level.
