In the realm of arts and culture, there are individuals who stand out, leaving an indelible mark. Honorable Aanena Jemitola, erstwhile Commissioner for Arts and Culture of Edo State, is one such remarkable individual. Her tenure under the governorship of Adams Oshiomhole witnessed groundbreaking initiatives that elevated the arts scene in Edo State. Among them, the first-ever Edo State Festival of Arts (EDOFEST) in 2014, which showcased the rich cultural heritage and artistic prowess of the state.
This groundbreaking event served as a platform for artists, performers, and artisans to exhibit their talents and celebrate the diverse creative expressions of the state. EDOFEST brought together individuals from different backgrounds, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their work and foster artistic collaboration.
History will also have it that Jemitola didn’t leave her home state the same way she met it. She spearheaded a remarkable initiative to preserve the environment by planting trees in strategic locations of Ososo, Ibilo, Igarra and Benin City.
The significance of Aanena Jemitola’s tree planting initiatives in these parts of Akoko Edo local government and Benin City cannot be overstated. This transformation not only brought aesthetic beauty but also created a healthier and more sustainable environment for residents, mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and promote biodiversity conservation. Trees act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. By increasing the tree cover in Benin city, Jemitola helped to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, making a tangible contribution to the fight against climate change.
The tree-planting initiative extends beyond carbon sequestration. It helps to improve air quality by absorbing harmful pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter, while releasing oxygen. They act as natural filters, mitigating the harmful effects of air pollution and creating a healthier living environment for residents.
Trees provide crucial habitats for various species of birds, insects, and other wildlife which promote biodiversity conservation. The increased green cover helped to restore balance to ecosystems, attracting and supporting a diverse array of flora and fauna.
I highlighted the profound positive impact of her initiatives to make it becomes clear that investing in the environment ensures a multitude of benefits for both present and future generations. If we cannot separate beauty from culture, then we can all say that Hon. Jemitola indeed enhanced the colors of the Edo culture through the trees planting initiative.
Hon. Jemitola’s initiative played a significant role in preserving the natural heritage of Edo State and ensuring its sustainability for future generations. Her large heart and commitment to environmental conservation in Edo state was again seen on a video she posted on her Facebook page on 23rd June, 2023 with the caption; “soon and very soon we are going to plant more trees…” knowing that involving local residents in the planting process created a sense of ownership and responsibility, she enjoined her friends to be a part of it. I hope every resident of Edo State is her friend and would join her to plant more trees soon and very soon.
The positive impacts, including improved air quality, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and the beautification of environment, underscore the significance of this initiatives. Moreover, the Honorable’s initiatives during her illustrious tenure and commitment to a better society should serve as an inspiration to serving government officials and all who have the ability to do something meaningful, no matter how little, for the development of the society.
