AMVCA Returns for 11th Edition, Promising a Spectacle of African Talent

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), the continent’s premier celebration of film and television artistry, is gearing up for its highly anticipated 11th edition, boasting a competitive field across 28 distinct categories.

This year’s event promises to be a dazzling showcase of African storytelling and technical prowess, as announced at a press conference held in Lagos on Thursday.

Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and Channels, West Africa, at MultiChoice, emphasized the AMVCA’s continued significance in recognizing and fostering talent within the African creative landscape.

“Celebrating the vibrancy and diversity of African storytelling, we are excited to once again open the doors for talented creatives across the continent to showcase their remarkable work to the world,” she stated.

The 11th AMVCA will honor achievements across two main segments. The first, comprised of 18 non-voting categories focused on technical and artistic excellence, will be adjudicated by a panel of esteemed judges. These categories spotlight the crucial behind-the-scenes elements that contribute to the overall cinematic experience.

“These categories focus on the technical and behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking that shape the magic seen on screen,” Tejumola explained.

The remaining 10 categories will be decided by public vote, empowering viewers to champion their favorite performers and productions. “The remaining 10 categories will be open to public voting, giving fans the opportunity to have their say in who takes home the coveted awards,” Tejumola added.

This year’s edition also introduces a new and exciting category: “Best Music Score,” recognizing the vital role music plays in enhancing the emotional impact and narrative depth of films and television series.

Nominees will be unveiled on March 23rd, during a special broadcast across all Africa Magic channels at 7:00 p.m. Immediately following the broadcast, voting will commence on the AMVCA website, allowing fans to support their chosen nominees.

The AMVCA festivities are scheduled to commence in May, culminating in the main awards ceremony on May 10th. Tejumola promises a spectacular event broadcast live across Africa Magic channels, bringing the glamour and excitement of the awards to a vast audience.

“The event will be broadcast live on Africa Magic channels across the continent, bringing the glitz and glamour of the awards to millions of viewers,” she confirmed.

Femi Odugbemi, Head Judge of the AMVCA, underscored the awards’ enduring importance as a platform for recognizing and celebrating excellence in African film and television.

“As an industry, we are constantly evolving. The expectations of filmmakers, audiences, and stakeholders continue to rise, and the AMVCA is committed to evolving with them this year, in response to valuable industry insights and our commitment to continual improvement,” he said.

Regarding the newly introduced “Best Music Score” category, Odugbemi noted, “With this category, we celebrate the creative professionals whose artistry brings authentic and lucid experiences to our productions.” The addition of this category highlights the AMVCA’s commitment to acknowledging the multifaceted contributions that shape the African film and television industry.
