Residents of the Ahia/Onogholo area of Edo State are on edge following a violent incident involving suspected cattle theft and an armed assault on herders. The attack occurred on a rural path near the Ahia Market in Ubiaja around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 6.
According to reliable sources, unidentified gunmen emerged from the nearby bush and opened fire on a group of herders who were guiding their cattle back to Okene in Kogi State.
A resident of the Oloshi community reported that one of the cows was shot during the ambush, causing the herd and herders to scatter. The assailants allegedly returned later to slaughter the injured animal and steal its meat.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility. Local efforts to identify the attackers have been unsuccessful, with community members claiming ignorance.
Security sources have confirmed an ongoing investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. The affected herders are appealing for assistance in locating their livestock and seeking justice.
