Christmas Carol: Obaseki Promises Edo Residents Improved Power Supply, Security, Others

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has promised to partner with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to deliver an improved power supply in 2023.

The Governor made this promise and others during a Christmas Carol organized by the Edo State government at the rebuilt State Secretariat Complex, on Sapele Road, Benin City.

He spoke about the current situation of the power supply, pointing out that Edo has the capacity to produce more than 1000 MW of electricity, which will be maximized in the upcoming year to power homes and businesses.

He said, “We are collaborating closely with BEDC’s new management to enhance the state’s overall electricity supply. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate, and we are confident that by this time next year, Edo’s electrical supply will have significantly improved.

“Edo State alone possesses the ability to produce more than 1000 megawatts of electricity daily, and we do not need that quantity of electricity to run every home and business.

“We will continue to tackle insecurity and make sure our people feel a sense of safety so that they can pursue their legitimate socio-economic activities,” Governor Obaseki stated in reference to security.

The Governor also discussed the importance of bringing Edo’s environmental ecosystem back to its former glory in the coming year and urged leaders from all spheres of the state to support this effort.

“We must make Edo State greener and cleaner. The environment presents one of our main problems. What climate change is doing in our state is evident.

“You will not believe that Edo is located in a rainforest if you look at satellite maps of Benin City and many other cities. Our land has seen extensive deforestation, which poses a serious threat to us.

“You see the type of rainfall we are currently having. In many communities throughout the state, the rain is being held down by nothing, which is causing massive erosion,” he added.

Governor Obaseki pleaded with leaders at all levels to assist his administration in restoring Edo’s natural environment to its former state.

The governor concluded by wishing the people a joyous Christmas celebration and saying, “We are going to be coming to you, talking to you, our traditional rulers, our religious leaders, we need to stop what we are doing, we need to go back and build a natural environment that God has given us.”
